If Democrat gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist expects to beat Florida Governor Rick Scott in the 2014 gubernatorial general election (first he has to win his primary race), then he is going to have to really step up his game, and find a way of winning over the Cuban-American community.
Several weeks back when Crist opened his Miami, Florida campaign office-plopping it down right smack in the middle of the Cuban community, Little Havana-Crist was greeted by about 100 supporters, a good portion being staffers and non-Cuban-Americans, as well as some protesters.Crist was greeted by two dozen or so pro-Cuban embargo Americans, and was taken off message by their chant “Shame on you, Shame on you” over an over during his address to the attendees of the office opening. (See video here)
The protest was organized to counter Crist’s recent support of lifting the U.S. embargo to Cuba. Former Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart, as well as other local Republican officials, including Miami GOP chairman, Nelson Diaz, were on hand to “greet” Crist.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
So after being ambushed and embarrassed within the Cuban-American community at the office opening, Crist is now being dealt another blow to his ego and campaign.
A recent Survey USA poll, has Rick Scott leading Crist by a 52%-46% margin among Cuban Americans. It is fair to assume that the overwhelming majority of these Cuban-Americans reside somewhere in South Florida.
According to Capital Hill Cubans:Since then, Crist has gone full-steam ahead with his newly-found Cuba policy of wanting to lift all sanctions, travel to the island, conduct business with the Castro regime (despite recognizing Cuba should remain a “sponsor-of-terrorism”) and insult those who disagree with him.
And then Crist insulted the entire Cuban community by questioning their support for the Cubans on the island.
The people in Cuba are suffering. It’s a policy that has not worked. If you really care about people on the island, you need to get rid of the embargo.”-Charlie Crist
Fast forward one month ahead to May, and a new Survey USA’s poll has Rick Scott crushing Crist by a margin of 63%-30% among Cuban-Americans.
What can we expect from Charlie Crist to do in an attempt close the gap between him and Rick Scott among Cuban-Americans?
- We can probably expect Crist to start wearing a Guayabera shirt at any and all Miami events.
- We can surely expect him to start speaking more Espanol. (Spanish for all of you amigos living in the Panhandle of Florida)
- We can probably expect him to take up dancing Salsa for the cameras.
- And, we can also expect him to put on an apron and visit some Latin restaurant and help in the kitchen.
