Florida State Senator and Majority leader Lizbeth Benacquisto, is expected to announce that she is running for Congress in Florida 19th congressional district. Benacquisto has been telling constituents and potential supporters that she is running, and just this week, the Fort Myers area Senator was in Washington, D.C. panning for congressional campaign support.
The announcement will most likely occur within the congressional district the early part of next week, possibly as early as Monday.Benacquisto was elected to the Florida Senate in 2010, and will be entering a contested Republican primary race that already includes long-time state representative Paige Kreegel.
The Republican special election will be held on April 22, followed by the special general election on June 24.
