With Florida’s CFO, Jeff Atwater possibly leaving his job for the open FAU President position, politicos around Tallahassee and the rest of the state are eager to see who steps up to fill Atwater’s big shoes.According to Republican State Committeeman, Bill Bunting, he is currently courting Speaker Will Weatherford to run for CFO, if Atwater is picked to head FAU, which would meant that he would have to resign from the governor’s cabinet.
Weatherford would be the ideal choice, considering that he is term-limited out at the end of this year, and has hinted at running for higher office down the road. Some believe that Weatherford would make a great Governor, making a run for CFO that much more enticing for Weatherford, simply because it would give him the statewide name ID he would need to run for Governor at a future date.
Not only would it help Weatherford boost his statewide profile, his candidacy would only enhance Governor Rick Scott’s re-election chances.
Governor Scott could appoint Weatherford, if the cabinet position opens up, but this would only happen after the 2014 legislative session has ended, giving the outgoing Speaker more than enough time to campaign before the November’s mid-term elections.
