Entering his August recess, Senator Marco Rubio lined up a few speaking engagements to discuss his efforts to defund Obamacare, a move that Florida grassroots activists and leaders saw as really being a damage-control tour of the state.Without any question, Rubio has shot himself in the foot on immigration reform, after he stood on stage with a few of the most liberal Democratic and Republican Senators in the U.S. Senate.
Not only do activists feel that Rubio flip-flopped on his 2010 campaign promise to only support legal immigration, but that he gave legitimacy to the pro-abortion, pro-Obamacare, and pro-tax Democrats, Dick Durbin and Chuck Schumer, by co-sponsoring the amnesty piece of legislation that eventually passed in the U.S. Senate.

Rubio is now singing a different tune, as to why immigration reform needs to pass in the U.S. House of representatives. By stating that if the House does not pull the trigger on immigration reform, President Obama would act on his own and legalize the 11 million illegal immigrants already living in the United States.
Did Rubio just pull that statement out of some crowded top hat? Michelle Malkin seems to thinks so, and called it a desperate attempt to defend his immigration reform push. But while Rubio’s assertion does seem far-fetched, there is precedent to his claim. Slate put out a story a few days ago which included a 2010 Department of Homeland Security memo that outlined what Rubio warned could happen.
Regardless of whether or not Rubio has a point here, he may have already irreparably damage his brand. Could Rubio’s betrayal on immigration be his Achilles Heal, were he to decide to run for re-election, or President in 2016?
Americans are forgiving, and time is on Rubio’s side. If he runs for President in 2016, Rubio will have enough time to distance himself from this immigration reform train wreck, giving him the opportunity to dismiss it as a mistake, and ask the grassroots to give him a second chance.
But even though American are forgiving, expect Rubio to take the lashes that he probably expects, and deserves. For those of you out there that have completely written Rubio off, you can sleep easier knowing that Rubio may have many a sleepless night, trying to come to terms with the fact that his beloved Miami Dolphins football team is expected to have a terrible season, and my not even win half of their games. Ouch!
