The 2013 Florida State budget has reached $70 billion, $50 billion, or 72% of the budget will be spent in the form of contracts granted to “service providers.”
Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater continues to make the budget as transparent for Floridians as possible, and do away with the gross business-as-usual way Tallahassee conducts business. Atwater is currently pushing legislation that among other things, will bring much needed clarity to the state contracting practice, as he proposes that state contracts should be competitively bid upon.
They’re a lot of lobbyist in this building who represent contractors that don’t want there to be such clarity, they don’t want that kind of transparency. They want to keep making money off this trough of ours. Is say no way, its done. You’re over.-CFO Jeff Atwater
