President Obama’s announcement that he is closing the White House’s to public unguided tours has raised the eyebrows of several members of Congress, including those of freshman Congressman Trey Radel.

In a letter he sent off to the President expressing his concerns over the President’s “childish” decision  to suspend the tours. Congressman Radel points out the that while the President is blaming Republicans for the sequester cut backs, Obama has spent $1.5 million on his very first state dinners, even paid for an 300 pound gingerbread house last Christmas, and hypocritically spends $181,000 an hour on Air Force One to rally against its own spending cuts.

 Here is Radel’s letter to President Obama- 

 

Americans around the country face considerable economic hardships in their own family budgets. Your decision to suspend the tours conducted through the White House Visitor’s Office does not reflect the tough decisions that they have made throughout your presidency. Instead, this childish and unacceptable decision seems intended to maximize pain felt by your sequester.

Political leaders should be setting an example. Instead, you have chosen to disappoint thousands of children, veterans of this country, and decent hard-working Americans who are making the effort to visit the “People’s House” in Washington.

 In a White House that spent nearly $1,500,000 on its first two state dinners, paid for a 300 pound gingerbread house last Christmas, and spends $181,000 per hour on Air Force One flights to conduct campaign-style rallies against its own spending cuts, it is disappointing and offensive to cancel self-guided tours that require minimal administrative costs.

 Despite further cuts to Congressional office budgets, including my own, my staff will continue to offer personal staff-guided tours to constituents who visit our nation’s capital to learn more about this county’s history and the important work done here.- Rep. Trey Radel
