The big liberal/progressive blogs- most notably the Daily Kos and the Huffington Post are atwitter over the fact that Allen West’s Republican primary opponent, Martin County Sheriff Robert Crowder has endorsed West’s opponent General Election opponent Democrat Patrick Murphy.
These libs genuinely believe that this endorsement is a game changer, but we’ve seen this movie before, and this endorsement isn’t going to prevent Murphy’s inevitable defeat.
Sheriff Crowder first came onto the political scene in 2010 when he backed Demcoratic gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink over Florida Governor Rick Scott. By any measure, Crowder can barely count himself as a Republican- he once urged Democrats at a Democrat club meeting to re-register themselves as Republicans and vote for him to defeat West.
Allen West’s Campaign Manager Tim Edson issued the following statement aout Crowder’s ‘tremendous’ endorsement of Murphy:
“Although I love my Republicans, the ones who are going to make the difference this election are the Democrats,” Crowder said. “Because you could be a Democrat, and become a Republican in the primary, and still vote for your Democrats in the generalelection.”- Sheriff Robert Crowder (Source)
“Crowder is a Democrat and a sore loser. I’m shocked he waited this long. Perhaps Crowder hopes to continue cozying up to local Democrats so he can be their nominee against Allen West in 2014.” – West for Congress Spokesman Tim Edson
As for Patrick Murphy, what more can we say about the long-time Republican turned Democrat? Murphy was a Republican up until a couple years ago, donating to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign not long ago. Now Murphy wants to run for Congress, and his handlers have decided to give Murphy a complete makeover of sorts.
Murphy actually had the audacity to call West a “coward” for not running against him in Congressional District 22 after West opted to run in Congressional District 18. Yet when West decided to run in District 18, Murphy took his own hypocritical campaign into District 18 and avoided a much more difficult contested primary with Lois Frankel in order to give himself an easier path to challenge West in the general election.
Just recently, Murphy displayed his own cowardice yet again when he was confronted with legitimate questions regarding his past statements. (Source)Any fair-minded observer should see Patrick Murphy for who he really is- a spoiled, eccentric party boy who’s being led around by his handlers who are pumping him full of Democrat talking points that Murphy seems very uncomfortable repeating.
Murphy’s tried to re-position himself as more of a ‘moderate’ candidate of late by ditching the extreme leftist rhetoric and the rah-rah support of the Obama agenda that he had on display just a few months back.
In the end, it won’t matter. There is as big a credibility gap as you’re ever likely to find between these two candidates- Murphy is unlikely to overcome the fact that he simply can’t compete with West’s gravitas and substantive knowledge of the major issues that matter. We’re confidently expecting a West victory in the 18th Congressional District by at least five points.
