After openly endorsing President Barack Obama for president, former Republican and now Independent Charlie Crist was added to the list of speakers who are scheduled to address the party faithful this week.
There is considerable speculation that Crist will use the opportunity to officially change his political affiliation to Democrat. It’s certainly not beyond the realm of possibility- it’s also possible that Charlie may have already made the switch and is using the heightened exposure that the DNC convention will afford him to make the announcement.
It’s been long established that Charlie Crist is the quintessential political opportunist, and he will once again try to convince voters that he is someone that he really isn’t in hopes of currying enough favor from Democrats in advance of a possible run for governor in Florida’s 2014 gubernatorial race against Republican Governor Rick Scott.
Crist’s rank opportunism was already on full display during the 2008 presidential campaign. After initially promising candidate Rudy Giuliani his endorsement for president, he then reneged on his promise and eventually endorsed Giuliani’s primary opponent John McCain. Later in the campaign, Crist went on national television and asserted that Republican Governor Sarah Palin was more qualified than Barack Obama to be President. But after Obama won election, Crist drifted away from out-of-power Republicans and became very supportive of Obama and his failed economic “Stimulus” plan, and it was his infamous “Fort Myers” embrace of this plan which sent his sky-high approval ratings into an irretrievable downward spin.Crist is already pressing the Democrat flesh around the state, most recently at luncheon hosted by the Poynter Institute where he was joined by his 2010 Senatorial race Political director Michelle Todd, moderately Republican State Senator Jack Latvala, his longtime friend and surrogate Greg Truax, as well some of Pinellas County’s most irresponsible political hacks who still remain true believers of him.
Crist’s ‘Alinsky-esqe’ supporters and and surrogates (some still working at the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) have engaged in character assassination in the past against then candidate Marco Rubio, and this cabal will no doubt be pulling the strings behind any future political campaign of Crist’s.
Rubio pithily summed it all up at a Republican Party of Florida’s breakfast meeting at the recently concluded RNC convention by telling those in attendance about Crist, “I told you so.”
Will Crist be able to convince Democrats that he will not betray them as he betrayed Republicans and Independents? The talk around several Democrat water coolers is that Crist will not be trusted or supported, but we have seen stranger things happen. Simply put, once it becomes apparent to enough people in Democrat circles that Crist could win the governorship, expect them to jump on board his bandwagon and then quickly circle their Party’s wagons.
