The latest polls coming out of Iowa have former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum firmly in third with 16% behind Mitt Romney’s 23% and everyone’s favorite angry congressman, Ron Paul who has 22%. Santorum’s surge is very telling in that it signals that evangelicals are actively engaged in Iowa, as their support for the other two ‘faith-based’ Republican presidential candidates, Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry is also evident.Simply put, Rick Santorum is solid. We have said in the past that the key to winning in Iowa, South Carolina, Florida, and ultimately the Republican nomination will be to lock down social conservative vote. Santorum is spot on when he addresses the volatile nuclear Iran, and lays out the consequences that it would have on Israel, and the United States. Santorum has also sided with Congressman Allen West in supporting an Israeli preemptive strike against Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Admittingly, I get a kick everytime during a presidential debate that Santorum lays into Ron Paul and schools him over foreign policy. Video-Santorum slams Ron Paul
While many would-be voters are starting to see Santorum as an electable ‘other than Romney’ choice for President, it is still too early to tell if Santorum will be able to sustain this momentum, and be able to raise the money to surge in the upcoming primaries. And let’s also remember that these are just polls, the Iowa caucuses are still a few days away and anything can happen.
