The race to unseat Democratic Senator Bill Nelson is expected to get more crowded as Congressman Connie Mack moves closer to formally announce U.S. Senate candidacy in the coming not too distant future.   

Mack originally stated that he would not seek the GOP nomination to face Nelson but has since reconsidered, and his team is working diligently behind the scenes prior to his forthcoming announcement.  A potential Mack run will not only be a formidable candidacy, it could directly jeopardize the prospects of U.S. Senator George LeMieux,  as both Mack and LeMieux would largely be competing for the same votes within the Party.  Both men are widely considered to be more ‘moderate’ Republicans who also supported Governor Charlie Crist’s unsuccessful 2010 U.S. Senate campaign.  

When Mack jumps in the race, he will have to answer questions about the questionable rhetoric he used to describe the Arizona’s illegal immigration law in 2010.  Congressman Mack called the law “appalling” and proceeded to describe the law in by comparing it to police tactics in Nazi Germany-

This statement infuriated Florida conservatives who believed the Arizona law was a necessary step and who wanted a similar law to be implemented in Florida.  Since his controversial immigration statement, Mack has stayed silent on about the illegal immigration, until now.

“All Americans are threatened by drug trafficking and the violent Mexican drug cartels that operate in over a thousand cities in the United States.  The State Department agrees that the activities taking place in Mexico are consistent with terrorist and insurgent activity in other regions of the world.”

According to a letter Congressman Mack sent to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Mack recommends a very deliberate and aggressive approach to countering the drug cartels- he takes the fight to them. In his letter, Mack believes that our focus needs to be at the border and in Mexico, implying that military operations should be conducted along and across the border to eliminate the threat these narco-groups pose, as the State Department as finally classified the escalating violence in Mexico as ‘Terrorism.’

This is a smart play on Mack’s part to dull the criticism he is likely to face on this issue, as the illegal immigration issue is inextricably tied to the drug trade.  By doubling the number of Border Agents and securing the border from all forms of terrorism, it will substantially curtail the number of illegal aliens from crossing over the border who serve as ‘mules’ and carry drugs for the cartels across the border.
