Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz isn’t usually to be found amongst scores of right-leaning political activists, but there she was at the the Cuba Democracy PAC event this past weekend, and in all seriousness, it was good to see her in attendance to bring attention to a worthy cause. Wasserman-Schultz is a not-so-rare reader and a big fan of the Shark Tank- for all of you non-believers out there, you can ask the Congresswoman herself! Unfortunately, her frequent excursions into shark-infested blogging currents do not seem to be having much of an impact on Wasserman-Schultz’s strident progressivism or her support for an Obama agenda that continues to cause a significant amount of damage to so many sectors of our economy.
It was Wasserman-Schultz who was at the forefront of the passage of the most ill-considered and destructive piece of legislation in U.S. History- ObamaCare, aka the deceptively named “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”. At last count, 222 companies, unions, and organziations have received a waiver from the law; the law has been ruled unconstitutional by a federal district judge, small businesses that aren’t exempted are crumbling under the law’s mandates, and the health insurance carriers that Wasserman-Schultz routinely castigates have no choice but to increase premiums and drop specific types of coverage they used to offer to their customers.
Not content to keep a low profile in the wake of the damage that’s been done, Wasserman-Schultz recently felt it necessary to take a shot at Governor-Elect Rick Scott and his promise to repeal ObamaCare here in Florida. Perhaps she senses the inevitable defeat headed her way, as the Florida Legislature is getting set to issue its own “salute” to this massive expansion of government control. Wasserman-Schultz clings to misguided notion that you can somehow lower health care costs simply by passing laws with price controls, to make a long story short- no matter that those costs are borne directly on the backs of healthcare providers. Debbie might want to read up again on that “law of unintended consequences” sometime soon.

I think he’s interested in making sure that health care corporations make as much money as they can.” – Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, commenting on Rick Scott
Wasserman-Schultz is no dummy, and yet she clings to a thoroughly discredited law on every level- moral, constitutional, economic, and practical. It makes one wonder why so many within our present political class refuse to learn and expand their understanding about how health care economics works and how excessive government control mucks up those once free markets and increases prices to consumers.
One can also wonder if Wasserman-Schultz has seen the survey that shows 74% of doctors and specialists preparing to either leave the profession entirely, cut back their hours, or retire early in the wake of ObamaCare. Or if she’s aware of the fact that there is now a plurality of likely voters who believe that the law will be repealed, which is hardly an insignificant threshold to attain.
Since the days of Medicare, the federal government has relied on a widespread amount of ignorance and apathy that has allowed it to create and maintain a patchwork mess of healthcare laws and regulations that ultimately distort markets, and President Obama hoped that this same societal inertia would help give his law a plurality of public support at least until it was fully implemented. Unfortunately for Wasserman-Schultz and her political cronies, the information and understanding gap amongst those in the ‘great unwashed” closed much quicker than they anticipated, and they are now forced to defend this indefensible law against a clear majority of Americans.
We all have much to be thankful this Christmas season. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz can be thankful that she received the attention of the finest medical system the world has ever known that helped her beat breast cancer. Conservatives can be thankful that the Florida Legislature will pass the Health Care Freedom Act, and the movement to repeal ObamaCare continues to gain momentum, as does the movement to repeal unconstitutional federal laws that encroach on state sovereignty. Even as this lame duck session of the 111th Congress continues to erode our freedoms at a breathtaking pace, there is still much to be thankful for this Christmas season.
