It appears that several members of Florida’s Republican Congress caucus are now sweating bullets after the Florida Supreme Court ruled 5-2 in favor of having 8 of the state’s 27 congressional districts redrawn.
This ruling stems back from a 2012 redistricting lawsuit filed that led to the discovery that the Republican-led state legislature leaked the original redistricted maps, and that its consultants were allowed to gerrymander the already gerrymandered districts to serve their own business purposes.Republicans could see two seats go Democrat when those congressional districts are redrawn. Those members whose seats are in jeopardy of losing their seats are David Jolly and Carlos Curbelo (pictured).
While Democrats like Rep. Corrine Brown, whose seat is probably the most gerrymandered seat in U.S. congressional history, will also be affected, will most likely stay Democrat-leaning, as will the others Democrat seats held by Reps. Ted Deutsch and Lois Frankel, who already enjoy nice blue cushions.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Frankel’s seat leans Democrat by 4 percent, but after the lines are redrawn, the seat could pull either way by few points.
Anyway you look at the upcoming redraw of Florida’s congressional district maps, Republicans stand to lose in all 8 of the districts.
If the final lines drawn favor Democrats (which is expected), Republicans holding these seats will have to hope that a strong Republican Presidential nominee, as well as strong Florida U.S Senate nominee come out of the 2016 primaries and help turn out voters to the polls. This was not the case for Republicans in 2012.
