Finally the law has caught up with Bowe Bergdahl and he has been charged with desertion and misbehaving before the enemy, Army officials stated on Wednesday.
Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl was the U.S. soldier who was saved in Afghanistan after spending five years in capacity. His release was also very controversial since Obama did not go to Congress for approval. It is said Bergdahl would not have been captured in the first place if he did not voluntarily walk off his post.As we reported, back in January Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer, a former military intelligence officer, told Fox News Bergdahl would be charged but Major General Ronald F. Lewis, the Army’s chief of public affairs denied the claims. Apparently that was a lie.
Bergdahl’s attorney, Eugene Fidell, told the Washington Post his client was handed the charge sheet on Wednesday.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Army officials also released a statement saying that Bergdahl has been charged with “desertion with intent to shirk important or hazardous duty and misbehavior before the enemy by endangering the safety of a command, unit or place.”
If convicted Bergdahl faces a maximum punishment of confinement for life, dishonorable discharge, a reduction to private and a total forfeit of pay and allowance. As for the desertion charge, it carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, dishonorable discharge, reduction to private and total forfeit of pay and allowance as well.
His case is scheduled for May 31, 2014 and will be held at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Same Houston, Texas. This is the facility where Bergdahl has served at since his recovery. The charges against Bergdahl have also brought up questions if the Obama administration handled the prisoner swap legally. In exchange for Bergdahl they gave the captures 5 Guantanamo detainees. It has been custom in the past never to negotiate with enemies holding people ransom because that will only give them incentive to do it again. Apparently the president does not understand that.
Either does Susan Rice, the US National Security Advisor under President Obama. After Bergdahl was released she said he served “with honor and distinction.” Was that a cover up in hopes no one would find out he was a deserter?
