Rick Scott continues to slam Senator Bill Nelson as a career politician, which is a point he’s consistently stuck to since announcing his run for the Senate. In a new 30-second advertisement titled Nothing, Governor Scott argues that Senator Nelson has not acted “for Lake O in Washington.”
The new ad cites a 1990 advertisement for Nelson where Nelson asserted that he would “fight to stop the poisoning of lakes and streams across this state. Lake Okeechobee is dying because of the massive dumping of pollutants.”After the advertisement was released, the Nelson campaign released their own advertisement pinning the growing environmental concerns on Governor Scott.
In a written response, Sebastian Kitchen, a spokesperson for Nelson’s reelection campaign, detailed that “Experts and scientists agree, Rick Scott’s almost eight-year assault on the environment has exacerbated the toxic algae outbreak plaguing much of Florida.”

However, Scott’s campaign noted that Governor Scott “invested record amounts in Florida’s environment and has stepped up time and time again when Washington politicians like Bill Nelson failed to meet their commitment to our state.”
The campaign also added that “It was Governor Scott who secured state funding for repairing the Herbert Hoover Dike at Lake Okeechobee, supported legislation to accelerate the EAA reservoir, received a commitment from the president’s administration to speed up dike repairs and secured funding through the Army Corps of Engineers to complete dike repairs by the Governor’s goal of 2022.”
