Since the election of President Donald Trump, there’s been talk about Russian collusion. However, recent reports showed that the only person Russians were trying to help in the election was Bernie Sanders.
Still, the investigation into meddling has been championed by Democrats, and Senator Bill Nelson is arguing that Russia has already penetrated Florida’s voting apparatus that will be used in the upcoming August 28th primaries. In a statement, Senator Nelson argued that “For months, (Rubio) and I have been warning Florida’s elections officials about the threat they face and urging them to reach out to the federal government for help. I hope the appropriate federal officials find a way to immediately provide them all the information they can to protect our elections.”
In response to this, Florida Governor Rick Scott is asking for evidence that security has been breached.

In a campaign event in Tampa, Governor Scott commented that “Either Bill Nelson knows of crucial information the federal government is withholding from Florida elections officials, or he is simply making things up.”
He then asked “Did Nelson illegally release some classified information? Or did he make this charge of Russian penetration up?”
Since the Presidential election, an emphasis has been put on better securing ourselves against foreign intervention, and Senator Marco Rubio has stressed the need for better security. In a statement, Senator Rubio explained that “Given the importance of Florida in our national politics, our state’s election systems have been and will remain a potentially attractive target for attacks by foreign actors. While I firmly believe states should remain in the lead on conducting elections, the federal government should stand ready to assist as needed in confronting actual or potential attacks from determined foreign adversaries. As I have done for months, I encourage all of our state and county elections officials to continue to work directly with federal agencies on these matters, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security. And I will do everything possible to ensure these agencies respond promptly and adequately to any requests for briefings, notifications of ongoing threats, and assistance in mitigating against potential attacks.”
