Hollywood set the ground for Leadership Blue where many Democratic candidates took the stage to voice their platform. Former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine gave a speech, and he also released a three-minute advertisement titled “Our Year. Our Moment.”
In the advertisement, it primarily tackles the issue of gun control, which Levine is a strong proponent of. The advertisement also shows Levine criticizing President Trump by saying that “The way someone runs their campaign, that’s how they’re going to govern. He’s unstable, he’s erratic. He hires, he fires. You can kill all the messengers you want, but you are the message.”Considering that the upcoming 2018 gubernatorial election is a referendum on the first two years of President Trump in office, the advertisement’s narrator also adds that “Trump’s unexpected victory was a wake-up call to Democrats all across the nation, especially in our state of Florida.”
However, mention of Levine being a gun owner has gone largely mum in the election and in the debates that he’s taken part in.

In an editorial piece he wrote for the Miami Herald, published on Monday February 26th, 2018, Levine comments on the Marjury Stoneman Douglas shooting and mentions that he’s a gun owner wanting the sunshine state “to have not the weakest gun laws in the nation, but the safest.”
