Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum has received the endorsement of Tom Steyer, a billionaire from California who’s known for leading a national campaign to have President Donald Trump Impeached. This marks the second endorsement from a billionaire with the first being George Soros, a controversial figure in politics who’s involvement with Hillary Clinton was one of the reasons why voters elected President Trump.
George Soros has already donated around $500,000 to Gillum’s campaign.NextGen America is proud to announce its endorsement today of @AndrewGillum for Governor of Florida. Gillum is a fierce advocate for common sense gun reform, a LGBTQIA+ champion, and a leader on climate change. He exemplifies the #youthvote vision of America’s future. pic.twitter.com/kNH3EPhOV0

In addition, NextGen America, Steyer’s organization, is pledging to contribute $1 million to Gillum’s gubernatorial committee and campaign as he seeks to replace term-limited Florida Governor Rick Scott. This is money the mayor is in need of because recent polls show that he’s lagging behind former Miami Beach mayor Philip Levine and former Congresswoman Gwen Graham.
In a news release, Steyer commented that “As we battle for the heart and soul of this nation, Andrew Gillum is the kind of leader we need on the front lines.”
In response to the endorsement, Gillum tweeted out a thank you to Steyer, saying that he’s proud of having the backing of Steyer and NextGen because “They’ve been fighting for our Democratic values all over the country, & we can’t afford to be patient anymore. The time for bold, audacious change is now & I know we’re ready to deliver it in August & November.”
