As a result of yesterday’s FIU bridge collapse, there’s a rush to figure out what happened and why it wasn’t avoided. Florida Governor Rick Scott is pledging to thoroughly investigate what caused the collapse that has killed several people, and Senator Marco Rubio is joining in support.
At a news conference yesterday, Governor Scott commented that “We will hold anybody accountable if anybody has done anything wrong.” He was also on twitter, updating followers on the people he was talking to and steps he was taking in order to properly respond to the tragedy.I have spoken with Miami-Dade County Police Chief Juan Perez about the pedestrian bridge collapse at FIU. I will be in constant communication with law enforcement throughout the day.

I have directed the Florida Highway Patrol to offer resources to aid local law enforcement’s response in Miami. They will be offering additional troopers to aid in search and rescue as well as traffic control. @FLHSMV

The bridge was being constructed in part with funds from a TIGER grant that provided $11.4 million that were awarded to the university with the goal of linking the school to the surrounding city.
