Shortly after it was announced that Broward Sheriff Scott Israel would be removed from office because of incompetence and neglect of duty during the Parkland shooting, it was announced today that Governor Rick Scott had ordered for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to conduct an independent investigation into the response of the Broward’s Sheriff’s Office on the day of the shooting.
In a written statement, Israel commented that the “BSO will fully cooperate with FDLE, as we believe in full transparency and accountability. This independent, outside review will ensure public confidence in the findings.”
But, the BSO has faced backlash since news broke out of the neglect, and 2nd amendment activists have pointed out that it showed the government could not be trusted with providing safety at a time like that. Also, the incompetence further proved that enacting stricter gun control laws would only limit law abiding citizens that would be able to defend themselves in a tough situation such as a shooting. Not to mention that it has also brought up conversation of arming teachers to be able to properly defend their students.
In addition, harder criticism was aimed at the FBI for failing to flag Nikolas Cruz as a threat after reports were made by people close to him that he was hoarding guns and might’ve been planning a school shooting.
