President Trump’s executive order on people traveling from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Syria has caused quite the uproar amongst the American people. Protests have erupted as a result and politicians like Senators Lindsay Graham and John McCain have voiced their disagreement with the President’s move.
Of those criticizing President Trump is Florida Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who released a statement slamming the President and the ban. In the statement, she says that she’s against “the suspension of visas from the seven named countries and of the US Refugee Admissions Program because we could have accomplished our objective of keeping our homeland safe by immediate implementation of more thorough screening procedures. I do note, however, that at least some individuals will continue to be admitted during this suspension period on a case by case basis and that the suspension period is temporary. In no case should this order be applied to individuals to whom visas have already been issued, are already permanent legal US residents, or have already been granted refugee status.”She also added that “Both the letter and the spirit of the rule of law, on which our liberties rest, require that we honor legal commitments and procedures established by law, including existing visas and approved refugee status, absent specific articulable reasons for reversing a prior decision. The new Administration needs to pay careful attention to crafting orders that honor existing legal commitments and existing law, in contrast to this broad brush approach which doesn’t focus on the precise problems.”
After the backlash, President Trump released a statement where he explained that the ban “is not about religion – this is about terror and keeping our country safe. There are over 40 different countries worldwide that are majority Muslim that are not affected by this order. We will again be issuing visas to all countries once we are sure we have reviewed and implemented the most secure policies over the next 90 days.”
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
