President Trump was vocal upon hearing of Fidel Castro’s death. He released a statement saying that Castro was a “brutal dictator who oppressed his own people for nearly six decades,” that “Fidel Castro’s legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights,” and that Fidel’s death should give the Cuban people “the hope of one day soon seeing a free Cuba.”
He also released a tweet two days later saying that the Cuban government needed to change their oppressive government if they wanted to continue having relations with the United States. If Cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the Cuban people, the Cuban/American people and the U.S. as a whole, I will terminate deal.

Now, in his first foreign trip since Fidel’s death, Raul Castro spoke at the CELAC summit in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic that Cuba wants to continue having relations with the United States and that he wants to share dialogue with President Trump.
Castro said that “I want to express the willingness of Cuba to continue negotiating on pending bilateral matters with the United States on the basis of equality, reciprocity and respect for the sovereignty and independence of our country and to pursue a respectful dialogue and cooperation on topics of common interest with the new government of President Donald Trump.”
Rex Tillerson, President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State has said that the Trump administration is going to be reviewing all of President Obama’s executive orders dealing with the rapprochement with Cuba.Castro also added that “Cuba and the United States can cooperate and live together in a civilized way, respecting our differences and promoting that which benefits both countries and peoples” but that “one shouldn’t wait for Cuba to undertake inherent concessions to its sovereignty and independence.”
