In his own somewhat gracious way, President Barack Obama bowed his head in defeat on his last full day in office, conceding to the Republican victory off preventing the closing of the naval base on Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
As you all remember, on Day 2 of his first term in office, Obama signed an executive order to close down the prison within the year. That year came and went, and seven years later, GITMO is still open for business.
Obama penned a letter to congress expressing his concern and disdain for this members who worked against him on keeping the prison open, accusing them of playing politics “above the ongoing costs to taxpayers.”
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
We all know that his wanting to close GITMO had absolutely nothing to do with saving taxpayer dollars. Absolutely nothing to do with it.
To his credit, while he wasn’t able to shut down the prison, Obama was able to diminish the prisoner rolls, exporting many of those Islamic enemy combatants back to the Middle East.
Unfortunately, many of those former GITMO detainees have rejoined their jihad against the U.S. and the rest of the western world.“No person has ever escaped one of our super-max or military prisons here, ever. There is simply no justification beyond politics for the Congress’ insistence on keeping the facility open.”-President Obama
President Donald Trump has vowed to keep the prison open, and could begin to populate the prison with more prisoners once he takes office.
