After weeks of hearing about faithless electors and a liberal effort to sway 37 Republican electors to vote for John Kasich, the electoral college voters finally placed their votes today to elect the next President of the United States. Donald Trump received more than the 270 electoral votes needed to become President, and the day had some surprises as well.
Of the 306 electors that pledged to vote for Trump, 304 voted for him and two Texas electoral members placed their votes for Ron Paul and John Kasich respectively. Of the 232 voters that pledged to cast their votes for Hillary Clinton, one electoral member from Hawaii voted for Bernie Sanders, three members from Washington voted for Colin L. Powell and another voter from Washington voted for Faith Spotted Eagle, a Native American leader who rose to prominence during the Dakota Access Pipeline protests.Ultimately, the surprise was that Hillary Clinton received less electoral college votes than she expected to receive and instead had more voters defecting from her.
This brings the Presidential election season to a close, and President-elect Donald Trump took to twitter to comment on his win.
The Presidential Inauguration will take place on January 20th, 2017.We did it! Thank you to all of my great supporters, we just officially won the election (despite all of the distorted and inaccurate media).
