Florida Governor Rick Scott has focused on growing the number of jobs and tourism to the Sunshine State.
Visit Florida, a tourism marketing corporation, comments that “the number of tourists in Florida has grown from about 82 million to more than 106 million, a 29 percent increase” as reported by the Miami Herald. The corporation has also “seen its budget grow from about $29 million to more than $78 million since 2009, a 169 percent increase in spending.”The President of Visit Florida, Will Seccombe, stated that the state’s spending is working based on the record tourism the State is experiencing. He explained that “the Florida tourism industry has done a tremendous job marketing the state both domestically and internationally during challenging times. It also shows that we will have to work even harder as a state and an industry to maintain that growth going forward.”
But now, incoming Florida House Speaking Richard Corcoran is expressing his disapproval of continuing to fund Governor Rick Scott’s job’s and tourism incentive programs. In an interview with the Times/Herald, Corcoran said that “their funding, absolutely from a House perspective, would be cut,” when talking about Visit Florida, who receives private and public funding. He says this is in an effort to tackle “things government shouldn’t be in the business of funding.”

Visit Florida has received some controversy because they haven’t disclosed how much spending is being used for marketing, which included a contract with Pitbull to promote Florida.
