In just about every poll taken over the past several months, Democratic senatorial candidate Rep. Patrick Murphy has been trailing Senator Marco Rubio in Florida’s U.S. Senate race.
This trend is obvious bad news for Murphy whose political career hangs on this race. But could there be a campaign saving event, or an “October surprise” waiting to be unleashed?
Its not yet October, but Team Murphy is sure acting like it is with the news that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump appears to have violated the U.S. embargo of Cuba.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
A Newsweek story alleges that Trumps “phenomenal” and “great” company paid a consulting firm $68,000 to travel to Cuba in hopes to create future business on the island.
Trump is reported to be neck-deep in how this all allegedly went down, and because Senator Rubio is by far the loudest and most ardent supported of keeping the embargo intact, Murphy believes this is an opportunity to call on Rubio to denounce Trump.
“Perhaps, after months of Donald Trump’s bigoted attacks and misogynistic comments, Marco Rubio will finally disavow him… “Or, more likely, there is no issue too sacred for Marco Rubio if it comes between him and his own political ambition. Our guess? He will respond with more of the same: silence.”- Galia Slayen, a Murphy spokeswoman (Politico)
Its worth a shot for Murphy, after all, he is down in all the polls. So, swinging for the fences, or throwing a Hail Mary pass into the end zone can’t hurt
But even if Rubio condemns Trump, how is it going to affect his chances of being re-elected to the U.S. Senate?
The importance of this race is profound. This race could decide whether or not Republicans retain control of the Senate, and may ultimately write both Rubio’s and Murphy’s political legacy.
