After the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Florida, Democrats from all around the country have come together to demand stronger gun control, including members of the U.S. House of Representatives, who participated in a so-called impromptu “sit-in” on the floor of the House in Washington, D.C.
But while Democrats have been holding gun ban protests and rallies back in their respect congressional districts, a recent report revealed that House Democrats have been planning similar protests of Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan once the Congress returned from the July 4th break. While Speaker Ryan and others have called the “sit-in” as being nothing more than a “political stunt,” many of these Democrats are using the shooting for absolute political expediency.
Enter Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Levine organized a large vigil on very gay-friendly Miami Beach shortly after the shooting, prompting Republicans to call him by saying that the prominent south Florida Democrat was an opportunist who only put the together the vigil because he was looking to run for governor of Florida in 2018.
But wait, even some Republicans decided to go against the political grain and have sided with Democrats.Clearly we know this was a hate crime, a terrorist attack, but we also know this person was able to buy an assault weapon with the horrible things in this individuals’ background, the watch list, and still bought an assault weapon, and I think in order to aid ourselves in our anti-terrorism, we need to get rid of the assault weapons.”-Flapolitics
Now enter City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado.
During the vigil on Miami Beach, Regalado emphatically urged that Americans back legislation that would outright ban the sale of any “assault weapons” or automatic weapons.
First of all, automatic weapons are not sold legally in the U.S..
Regalado’s daughter Raquel Regalado, a Miami-Dade County mayoral candidate, is also backing her father’s move to ban “semi-automatic weapons” from being sold.
I stand by my statements and by my track record. My track record on curbing gun violence and limiting access to semi-automatic weapons is clear and publicly documented. I have been talking about gun violence since Sandy Hook.”-Source
While Democrats are quick to blame the gun and not the individual who actually squeezes the trigger, any Republican running for elected office on an anti-gun message in a contested primary race will realize that the path to victory will be tough road navigate.
