Currently the statue is displayed in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall as a representation of Florida’s history. Gen. Smith’s statue is accompanied by a statue of John Gorrie who has long been considered the father of air conditioning. They both have representing Florida for a long time.
State senators voted 33-7 to approve bill SB 310 that would start a process to replace the Smith statue.
The bill was debated Wednesday on the Senate floor even though it passed quietly on Thursday.

Bill sponsor John Legg (R-Trinity) stated he remembered taking students to the U.S. Capitol in 1999 and getting questions about why he statue represented Florida.
