After filing legislation in the Florida House of Representatives back in 2013 to stop Common Core education standards- effectively catapulting the issue of government-run education into the public spotlight- Rep. Debbie Mayfield will now be filing a joint resolution to amend the Florida Constitution that would change the Commissioner of Education post from an appointed position, to an elected one.
If Mayfield’s bill passes in the Florida legislature, it will then go to the Secretary of State, whose job it would be to word how the amendment reads on the 2016 ballot. The amendment would install the Commissioner of Education position onto the Governor’s cabinet alongside the CFO, Attorney General and Commissioner of Agriculture.
The cabinet would then be tasked to serve as the acting Board of Education, which is currently appointed by the governor.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
If the constitutional amendment gets on the 2016 ballot, and is voted on and passes, the job of Commissioner of Education will then be placed on the 2018 ballot.
