The recent shooting of a black man by a plain clothes police officer in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, which has already perked the attention of the national med, has now caught the eye of the State Rep. Shevrin Jones (D), who has now called on Florida’s legislative Black Caucus to join him in demanding that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigate the shooting.
The deceased man, Corey Jones, was pulled over along the highway as a result of his car breaking down, when Officer Nouman Raja pulled up to him in an unmarked vehicle.Jones, a drummer, was carrying a firearm, but it is not clear whether he drew his weapon before or after Officer Raja drew his.
Jones’ family is wondering if he even knew Raja was a police officer.

“I did not personally know Mr. Corey Jones, but, I am calling on my colleagues in the Legislature, and particularly those from South Florida, to join me in seeking a full investigation of yet another incident of a police-involved shooting and a law enforcement agency releasing little information in the face of legitimate questions from citizens,” Jones said Tuesday in a news release. “We need an agency that’s completely independent and without any connections to the department. I only wish we required body cameras for all law enforcement officers, to protect the officers and citizens alike.”
Black Caucus Chairman and state Rep. Ed Narain, D-Tampa, said Jones’ family deserves answers. He also indicated black caucus members have already been working behind the scenes to convince Gov. Rick Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi and others to become more active in the investigation.
“After meetings with the governor’s office, representatives from the attorney general’s office and the local state attorney’s office to address this matter, we now call upon the Governor to immediately start an independent investigation and restore the public’s confidence in the Palm Beach Gardens investigation,” Narain said, according to prepared remarks he planned to deliver at a noon press conference. “We also call upon our peers in the Legislature to pass Rep. Shevrin Jones’ Body camera bill (HB 93) and enact Barbara Watson’s Automatic Investigation Process bill (in drafting) that would require FDLE’s automatic review of all officer involved shootings statewide.”-JaxIt is only a matter of time before the race-hustlers like Al Sharpton and the Black Lives Matter movement decide to insert their divisive and vitriolic agenda in this tragic shooting.
