There is an old saying that says: actions speak louder than words and that is what has people baffled about Ben Carson.
Carson says he is pro life and he talks about it at length but what he has done in the past does not support it.As a retired pediatric neurosurgeon he has referred woman to doctors who perform abortions, he was the trustee of a foundation that gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to Planned Parenthood and his campaign is struggling to articulate which legal restrictions he supports on the procedure.
POLITICO reported his history on the issue is shaped by his medical background. He referred woman carrying fetuses with genetic defects to doctors willing to perform abortions and he has conducted research using fetal tissue. When asked about those decisions he stands by them even though he says they are against his personal beliefs.

His communications director, Doug Watts said:
When Watts was asked if Carson stood behind his previous decisions he said he does.He believes in quality medical care, No. 1, and secondly, he believes in people making their own decisions based on facts and information.
He believes people ought to have all the facts available to them, but he is steadfastly opposed to abortion. Referring it on does not mean he is advocating it, he’s advocating they are getting qualified medical supervision. He has always believed that the battle over abortion had to be waged in the hearts and minds of Americans, that you cannot legislate morality. But he also believes we’re winning the debate.
A lot of other pro-abortion rights politicians have the same thoughts about the procedure but do not feel it is their role to pursue legal restrictions on it.
When asked to name a legal restriction Carson is against, Watts did not answer and simply said:
It’s not a matter of legality, because there is legal abortion, but you’re asking for his point of view, where his restrictions are. Restrictions are not necessarily in his mind determined by laws. He believes that life begins at conception and that he is opposed to abortion after that.
