On Sunday, beach goers in St. Pete Beach, Florida saw what they initially thought was a log washed up on the shore. To their surprise, they found out it was a World War II-era bomb.
They called authorities who quickly evacuated nearby homes and ordered everyone off the beach.Hillsborough County bomb squad and crews from MacDill Air Force Base confirmed it was a World War II M122 photo flash bomb and it weighed approximately one hundred pounds.
A berm was constructed around the bomb to protect nesting sea turtles and the choice was made to set off the bomb on the beach.

Though it is not clear how the bomb ended up on the shore, after World War II similar weapons were thrown into the Gulf of Mexico.
