On Thursday former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was indicted for allegedly structuring cash bank withdrawals of funds in which he used to hide his prior misconduct with an unnamed individual and then lying to the FBI about it.
In Chicago a federal grand jury charged Hastert officially with withdrawing $1.7 million in cash from several banks over four years. Many of those withdrawals were designed to avoid triggering federal reporting rules.Prosecutors said Hastert struck a deal with an unnamed individual in 2010. He agreed to pay them “3.5 million in order to compensate for and conceal [Hastert’s] prior misconduct.”
There was reportedly 15 withdrawals of $50,000 between 2010 and 2012 from several different banks. The unnamed individual was then paid cash every six weeks.

In 2012 he was questioned by the bank about his withdrawals and after that he began withdrawing smaller amounts of cash.
The indictment said:
He had been withdrawing cash in increments of less than $10,000 to evade currency transaction reporting requirement.
In 2014 the FBI questioned Hastert about the withdrawals and it is said he lied to them. Per the indictment, Hastert told the he was withdrawing the cash and storing it because he did not feel it was safe in the bank.
If charged with both crimes Hastert could face 10 years in prison and have to pay $500,000.
Prior to getting elected to the House of Representatives, he was a high school teacher and coach in Illinois. Hastert served as the House speaker from 1999 until 2007.
In 2008 he was hired by Washington lobbying firm Dickstein Shapiro. It has been reported by several sources, Hastert resigned from the firm on Thursday.
