On Sunday, Senator Ted Cruz said he is “pressing” Senate Armed Service Committee Chairman John McCain to hold hearings on whether soldiers should be allowed to carry their concealed firearms onto military bases per POLITICO.
He was at a New Hampshire town hall speaking before 120 people at the Londonderry Fish and Game Club while his wife, Heidi, stood behind him wearing a cap that said “Armed & Fabulous.”Cruz said:
I am very concerned about that policy. I think it’s very important to have a public discussion about why we’re denying our soldiers the ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Currently Defense Department leaders oppose relaxing the ban which was put into place under Bill Clinton.
Pro-gun activists have argued that letting troops arm themselves on base would give them the better chance to defend themselves. There have been three mass shootings at military installations in the last five years.
Generals have counter argued that only military police officers should be able to carry weapons around base. It is said allowing more people on base to have guns would only lead to more violence especially if a soldier is suffering from mental instability due to combat. In conclusion Cruz asked the audience:
If we lose our freedom here, where do we go?
