On Tuesday the bill aimed at overturning President Obama’s executive actions on immigration was blocked in the Senate.
A majority of the Senate Republicans voted 51-48 to proceed with the bill from the House. As for the Senate Democrats, they voted against considering the bill thus leaving the Republicans short of the 6o votes they needed to end a filibuster. The ball in back in Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (KY-R) court and it is unclear what he will do next. He said:
The way to change a bill is to get on a bill and offer amendments. So I think it’s a rather honestly absurd position to say ‘we object to a bill, but don’t want to debate the bill or change the bill.’
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
As we reported before the amendment reversing Obama’s executive actions was attached to legislation funding the Homeland Security Department to the end of the fiscal year. If the bill is not passed the departments will be partially shut down after February 27.
Senator Mike Lee (UT-R) also commented about the current status of the bill. He said:
We need to do everything we can to push what was passed by the House of Representatives through. I think we’re going to stay at it, I don’t think we’re gong to walk away from it.
Either way the Senate only has a few weeks left to decide what to do because they are expected to only be in session for two more weeks this month before they are off a week for President’s Day.
