It appears as if the U.S. Supreme Court has left the door open for same-sex marriages to thrive as it has turned away 5 state appeals to prohibit gay marriage.
What does this mean?31 states out of 50 could have legal gay marriage, as a result of the SCOTUS passing on these appeals.
Who will these 31 states have legal marriage after only 5 states were denied?

First of all, those 5 states will immediately have legal gay marriage, while there are another 6 states may see gay marriage be legalized because their jurisdiction is covered by those appeals courts who supported gay marriage in the 5 states who just had their appeals struck down by SCOTUS.
