In light of the IRS disclosing that it has “lost” emails central to the agency targeting conservative groups and individuals, it is notable that U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) has been silent about the matter. Even more so that Hagan herself is the target of a Freedom of Information Act request involving the matter.
News reports have surfaced that Democratic lawmakers may have been the impetus of the IRS targeting and punishing conservative groups. To that end, the National Republican Senatorial Committee sent the IRS a Freedom of Information Act over a year ago asking for “any and all documents or records, including but not limited to electronic documents, e-mails, paper documents, photographs (electronic or hard copy), or audio files,” related to correspondence from January 1, 2009 and May 21, 2013 between thirteen different Democrat members of Congress and top IRS officials – including Hagan. The NRSC been repeatedly stonewalled by the IRS, despite a legal requirement to respond to FOIA requests.
“Kay Hagan hasn’t said a word about the missing emails and is sitting back rather than demanding answers,” said NRSC Press Secretary Brook Hougesen. “This is just another instance of Kay Hagan putting her own political career above the well-being of North Carolinians. Sen. Hagan not only refuses to say whether she will return the contributions from the IRS Union, but she refuses to demand additional information from President Obama and the IRS about this deeply concerning scandal.”

Sen. Hagan has benefitted from the Democrats’ close relationship with the IRS, accepting $7,500 from the National Treasury Employees Union, which covers IRS employees.
The big question now — will Lois Lerner’s missing emails need to be found before the trail of scandal knocks at Kay Hagan’s door?
