This race to replace former Congressman Trey Radel has been marred by negative TV commercials and mailings from the very beginning, and state Senator Lizbeth Benacquisto and her supporting PAC’s have been responsible for the bulk of these ads.
The recent FEC filings showing that one of these PAC’s supporting Benacquisto, the Liberty and Leadership Fund, was apparently trying to influence the vote even more, as it starting spending money in support of another candidate in the race, Michael Dreikorn.
Dreikorn denied knowledge of the PAC’s action in support of his campaign on a comment he posted on the Shark Tank story about the little stunt.Benacquisto was considered the favorite in the race from the beginning, and was able to garner the endorsements of Sarah Palin, Rep, Jason Chaffetz, Rep, Diane Black, as well as other notable members of Congress, but her outright false negative ads against Clawson and Paige Kreegel, may have sunk her chances of winning
Clawson received the endorsements of the Tea Party Express, former Congressman Connie Mack, the Lee County Chamber of Commerce, and Representative Michele Bachman.
The primary election is this Tuesday, April 22, and the winner of the heavily Republican-leaning district will face a Democrat challenger on June 24.
