By JAVIER MANJARRESMembers of Congress continue expressing their opinions on who is to blame for the current government shutdown. Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D) blames Republicans for the “economic shutdown,” while making the point that Obamacare was voted on by the majority in the House and Senate, then signed by the President, and was later upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Wilson also added that she would welcome Republicans to “undo the law if they could repeal it” through the same legislative process in which it passed to begin with.
Elections have consequences.
Aside from stating that “pregnant women will go without health and nutrition assistance,” Wilson says that ” veterans will go without services” and their monthly benefit payments.
“This is not a government shutdown. It’s an economic shutdown. Failure to pass a Continuing Resolution means 800,000 federal workers—many of whom live paycheck to paycheck—will be home from work, not knowing when they will be paid again. It means pregnant women will go without health and nutrition assistance. Its means veterans will go without the services and payments they’ve earned. It means homebuyers and small businesses will be unable to receive loans. This economic shutdown would double-down on the pain caused by the Sequester—making cuts to education, police, firefighters, hospitals and health clinics even worse.-Rep. Frederica Wilson (D)
Wilson, along with other Democrats like Alan Grayson have been outspoken about supporting veterans, yet voted against H.J Res. 72, a bill proposed by Republicans that would fund the Department of Veterans Affairs during the government shutdown.
