According to Republican Congressman Steve Southerland II(FL), the Obama administration is apparently not as ‘environmentally protective’ of marine life as they have said they were.
The “federally-mandated” program to destroy all of those old oil and gas rigs in the Gulf of Mexico,”Idle Iron”, is killing off “thousands of red snapper and other marine life at a time when Gulf fisherman are already struggling to stay afloat with 27 day red snapper season.”
The Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) regulates marine fishing within 200 miles of the U.S. coast line. This means that NOAA is the government organization that established the restrictively short red snapper season.

“The Idle Iron program has killed thousands of red snapper and destroyed corals and reefs that took years to develop,” Southerland said. “It is infuriating that the same Washington bureaucrats who authorized this program are the individuals who have forced our fishermen to make due with a 27 day red snapper season. I am hopeful that the administration will provide our fishermen with the answers they deserve and prevent the destruction of a precious resource.”-Rep. Steve Southerland
