President Obama has called for an extension of the Bush tax cuts for the ‘middle class’ who are making under $250,000 a year, but in doing so he is allowing the rest of the Bush tax cuts expire for those making more than that amount, an effective tax increase.   The redistribution of wealth has been Obama’s M.O. from the day he told ‘Joe the Plumber’ we needed to do so back in 2008.  But Obama’s redistributive tax strategy has Florida Senator Bill Nelson in a corner, as he finds himself in he middle of an intra-party squabble.  One one hand, President Obama is calling for tax hikes on incomes over $250,000, while other Democrats are calling for tax increases on those earning over a million dollars.

Nelson’s likely Republican opponent Congressman Connie Mack is calling out Nelson for trying to have it both ways on the tax issue.  As you may recall, Nelson opposed the Bush tax cuts back in 2001 an in 2003, but now Nelson is calling for the extension of the Bush tax cuts for families making less than a million dollars- a position that is in opposition to the President but nonetheless still a tax hike.

Recent polls show Nelson with the slimmest of leads over Mack, but with this move Nelson is attempting to re-brand himself as a tax cutting “moderate” again by calling for a temporary extension of the current income tax rates for those under earning one million dollars- a move which is not a tax cut, only a freezing of some marginal tax rates- as well as the increase of rates for those earning more than a million.

Senator Nelson has pulled the wool over Floridians’ eyes twice by positioning himself as a moderate Democrat.  Subsequent to Obama winning the presidency in 2008, the real Nelson emerged and fell in line with the President’s failed policies 98% of the time.  There’s simply no chance that Nelson will base his run Senate on his voting record nor will he proudly tout his support of ObamaCare.  Nelson is simply attempting to cleverly position himself on this tax issue to provide himself with political cover as and tout himself as a “moderate.”

Here is Mack’s statement taking Nelson to task for his chameleon-like positioning on taxes-

“A tax increase of any kind is not an extension of any Bush-era tax relief, simply put, a tax increase is a tax increase.  Liberal Bill Nelson’s transparent attempt to distance himself from the President he supports 98% of the time will not stand with Florida voters.  Bill Nelson opposed the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 and opposed extending them; so let’s be clear on where Bill Nelson stands any the Bush-era tax cuts.  Bill Nelson cast the deciding vote on ObamaCare too, the largest tax increase in American history and now has the nerve to call for more taxation today at a time when our economy remains stalled with 8.2% unemployment.  All Americans need tax relief and deserve all of their elected officials to slash the federal budget. Pitting one segment of our population against another is nothing more than a cheap, liberal ploy that is both appalling and disgraceful.  Enough is enough Senator Nelson.”- Congressman Connie Mack
