While scanning through my Facebook news feed a few days ago, an old friend of mine popped up on my instant messenger and sent me a link to a video explaining that if “you got a half an hour that will change a bit of perspective of your life. did mine!” Somewhat intrigued, I told my friend I would definitely check it out and report back to him. I then clicked on the link and was taken to the “KONY 2012” video on Youtube.
Even though I’m online during a good chunk of the working day trolling for news, I was totally unaware of this now massive social media-based awareness campaign before my friend sent me the video link. And while I was aware of the Obama Administration’s much hyped efforts against the Lord’s Resistance Army, I didn’t realize that Joseph Kony, the leader of the LRA was the target of this social media campaign. Shows you just how far out of the loop I was- the KONY 2012 video now has over 77 million views.

Now there’s no doubt that Kony is a murderous madman who has committed shocking humanitarian atrocities, but given what we already know about the Obama Administration’s ongoing mendacity and emphasis on its “perpetual campaign”, I think it’s safe to say that KONY 2012 is a cleverly orchestrated piece of propaganda that the Obama Administration is parlaying for its own benefit. Furthermore, President Obama is cloaking the real reasons why his administration singled out the Lord’s Resistance Army and brought them to international attention, and he’s hiding those reasons behind the person and the identity of one Joseph Kony.
Take a look at this snippet from Kony’s bio that’s published on a number of Internet sites:
Joseph Kony considers himself quite a good Christian, and he wants Uganda to be a Christian nation. So in 1987 he formed a resistance group called the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), and the LRA has been at civil war against the Ugandan government ever since. If the LRA wins, Kony has promised that Uganda will become a theocracy, with laws based on the Biblical Ten Commandments.
Joseph Kony therefore represents a convenient foil for President Obama- a truly darkened individual who in the minds of progressive left wingers resembles their caricature of conservative Republicans- a fundamentalist Christian who also doubles as a domestic terrorist. Janet Napolitano, call your office.
It’s actually Islamic militant groups who presently pose a far greater threat to the stability of African governments and the safety of their civilians across the continent than Kony presently does- particularly in Nigeria. What’s more, it’s actually Al-Qaeda who is the more proximate security threat to the Ugandan people than the LRA is. Instead of choosing the more serious threats to confront, Obama has chosen to shine the spotlight on a marginalized warlord whose whereabouts in the African jungle are currently unknown, and he’s even had the audacity to commit U.S. Military advisers to the region to track and remove someone who may already be dead.
KONY 2012 is particularly insidious because of the way that the documentary manipulates its younger audience by playing off of the vulnerability and innocence of the Ugandan children while misinforming them about the true situation on the ground in Uganda. The producers of KONY 2012 laughably inform their viewers that the video will expire on December 31, 2012 – regardless of whether or not Kony has been captured. Can anyone give a plausible reason why any legitimate humanitarian cause should have an expiration date attached to it- especially when the stated goal of this particular cause is to capture a war criminal who is on the run from justice?
As KONY 2012 misinforms and manipulates its viewers throughout the video, the part that’s most revealing as to the true intentions of the producers is the brief scene which cleverly portrays President Obama in a very favorable light. After being informed that Obama has decided to commit U.S. Military advisers to assist in the “removal” of Kony, the crowd assembled at the Invisible Children Headquarters in San Diego erupts in jubilation. Yay, Obama, the ever righteous leader of the world has acted on our noble cause! There’s little doubt that Obama’s groupies will insist that this decision is yet another one of his so-called “gutsy calls,” and KONY 2012 serves to highlight that decision and transform it into a very cleverly contrived piece of publicity for Obama that serves his ends.
The subsequent debate that has ensued about the Lord’s Resistance Army and the questions about whether the U.S. should even be intervening in this part of the world militarily to remove Joseph Kony are more of a distraction than anything. What’s likely the most pressing concern of KONY 2012 is not the immediate safety of the Ugandan people from Joseph Kony, it is to use them as a tool while cleverly propping up the sagging stature of Barack Obama among primarily younger audiences through a cleverly-produced “social awareness” campaign. KONY 2012 actually leaves its true believers much more in the dark about the African geopolitical scene than the jungle- or the grave- that Joseph Kony currently resides in.
