Floridians are split on whether or not to allow “Destination Casino” resorts to be built throughout the state- a measure that will soon come to a vote in the Florida Legislature. The argument for the construction of the casinos has been made with a little help from the other “gaming opportunities” that are already in play throughout the state, pun intended. Florida already has a vast assortment of gaming including slot machines, parimutuel betting, dog racing, horse racing, and card games that can be found in tribal lands as well as aboard cruise ships. The other side of the issue is the concern voiced by some who believe that these types of casinos may bring a criminal element along once they are established. In addition, there are faith-based and family oriented organizations who are speaking out against the casinos because they feel that many families are in jeopardy of being torn-apart due to the potential risk of addiction to gambling.
It is now up to the Florida Legislature to decide on whether or not to approve the gaming measure. While the state legislature is also divided on the issue, Congressman Allen West is one of the few congressional representatives thus far to chime in on the issue.

West also stated that this measure would not be a cure all for the ailing economy or economic development- a “panacea,” as he stated.
