The recent failure of the Florida State Legislature to pass an immigration reform law with an E-Verify component has not gone silently into the night- in fact, the failure has caused many Floridians and elected officials to noticeably qualify their praise of state legislators and the 2011 legislative session.
One such elected official that took notice of this failure is Congressman Allen West. At his recent townhall meeting in Davie, West said the “state legislature missed the boat” when asked a question about illegal immigration reform and E-Verify.
Congressman West also stated that illegal immigration directly effects so many other issues- our health care system, national security and educational system- costs are shifted to legal taxpaying citizens. In addition, West quoted the clause of the Constitution where is says that states have the responsibility to protect its citizens when the federal government fails.
