Florida Governor Rick Scott took a swim in the Shark Tank to give his thoughts on the now closed 2011 Florida Legislative session. Governor Scott gave his take on the budget and tax cuts, calling special attention to the business tax cuts that eliminated the corporate tax for almost 50% businesses that were already paying it. Scott indicated he will sign the budget but also stressed that he will do a post-budget “line item review” that identifies, “the things that don’t help build jobs, I’m gonna veto.” In regard to the failed PIP initiative, Governor Scott said he was ‘disappointed’ that the legislature couldn’t get this important measure done.
Governor Scott campaigned on a promise for an ‘Arizona style’ immigration law, but when I asked him about the subject, it was hard not to note his disappointment about the topic. Even while enjoying supermajorities in both legislative bodies, the self proclaimed “most-conservative Senate ever” dropped the ball and embarrassed the Governor by not passing an immigration bill with a public E-Verify component that he was seeking. Scott hid his disappointment pretty well by stating that the Legislature did at least pass the State E-Verify measure, and stated that “next session my goal is that we will have a logical immigration bill.”
