Democratic State Senator Jeff Clemens resigned from his post in the Florida Senate last Friday over the affair he had with Lobbyist Devon West was uncovered.
Clemens admitted that he had been in therapy over his misstep, and apologized to his wife and anyone else he hurt along the way.
“I used poor judgment and hurt people that I care about, and for that I apologized long ago. But I also owe my constituents and colleagues an apology, and I intend to do just that… “No excuses are good enough or can undo the pain I’ve caused. I have spent a lot of time, long before I was contacted by a reporter, focusing on improving my behavior…I will always aim to be a better person, be as honest in my private life as I am with my public one, and continue to seek forgiveness from the people I have wronged.”-Sen. Jeff Clemens apology statement to the POLITICO
Clemens is already dealing with his demons and is now out of politics. Republicans are justly going after him for his participation in the downing of former Republican State Senator Frank Artiles, who was also forced to resign for making off-colored and racially insensitive remarks to two Florida legislators.
But where is the outcry over how the Florida Senate tried to cover this all up? According to the POLITICO, Senator Jack Latvala (R), a 2018 Republican gubernatorial candidate, tried to fix the problem:
Clemens went to Republican Senate Budget chief Jack Latvala, a mutual friend of Clemens and West, for help. And Latvala, in turn, enlisted the current Senate Democratic leader, Oscar Braynon of Miami Gardens.
Braynon and West lived in the same building, the Tennyson condominium in downtown Tallahassee. West left Clemens’ laptop in a bag at the condo’s concierge desk for Braynon to pick up for Clemens.
Word of the affair began to leak out this month as lawmakers began holding committee hearings in Tallahassee amid a national discussion about sex and power dynamics in the workplace.
The affair between Clemens and lobbyist Devon West came to a head at the end of the regular spring lawmaking session, when West came into possession of Clemens’ Apple laptop and gained access to all his contacts and personal information, then informed his wife of the tryst, according to sources familiar with the affair who had spoken to Clemens.
Now where is the lambasting of Devon West for apparently scouring through Clemens’ laptop without his permission?
Can she be trusted?
It is fair to say that Clemens did not hand over his computer to West so that she and rifle through all of this personal information, let alone contact his wife.
Could this be the case of a scorn lover who felt the need to out her accomplice to his wife? Read between the lines.
Women, and some men, who are upset over break ups, tend to go after their significant other in the most personal way.
Some individuals go as far as taking screen grabs of emails and texts to threaten.
The bigger question is, if the alleged affair that is currently going on between two prominent Florida Senators goes to press, will Latvala and others seek to try to cover it up?
Everyone in Tallahassee knows about this affair. One of the worst kept secrets.
