In a very rare moment of bipartisanship, Florida’s entire congressional delegation has come together to ask President Donald Trump not to open up oil drilling off the eastern coast of the state.
The Trump Administration has been flirting with the idea of opening up oil and gas exploration in the Atlantic Ocean.
In a signed letter to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, the members said that offshore drilling on the Atlantic side would “harm” the coastal economies, and compromise national security.
“Opening the Atlantic to seismic testing and drilling jeopardizes our coastal businesses, fishing communities, tourism, and our national security,” reads a letter signed by the Florida lawmakers and dozens of others. “It harms our coastal economies in the near term and opens the door to even greater risks from offshore oil and gas production down the road. Therefore, we implore you not to issue any permits for seismic airgun surveys for subsea oil and gas deposits in the Atlantic Ocean.”-Letter to Sec. Ryan Zinke
