Since winning the Presidential election on November 8th, Trump’s rumored cabinet picks have been dominating the mainstream media. Reince Priebus has been heavily rumored to take the role of White House Chief of Staff and Stephen Bannon is rumored to be tapped for chief strategist, and it seems that Donald Trump will also be making history with a pick if the rumor involving Richard Grenell proves to be true.
Grenell was an early Trump supporter, a pro-life and 2nd amendment supporter, an openly gay man and is rumored to be taking the role of UN ambassador under the Trump administration. This rumor comes at a time when Trump and his administration are being accused of homophobia. In turn, this along with other rumored administration picks would prove that a Trump administration would be more diverse than critics argue.
In a 1999 interview with the Advocate, an LGBTQ magazine, when he was seeking the Reform Party’s 2000 Presidential nomination, Trump was asked why gays and lesbians should be interested in Trump as a candidate. He replied that “In all truth, I don’t care whether or not a person is gay. I judge people based on their capability, honesty, and merit. Being in the entertainment business — that is, owning casinos and … several large beauty pageants — I’ve worked with many gay people. I have met some tough, talented, capable, terrific people. Their lifestyle is of no interest to me.”
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
When asked if he’d include gay people in a Trump administration, he responded that “I would want the best and brightest. Sexual orientation would be meaningless. I’m looking for brains and experience. If the best person for the job happens to be gay, I would certainly appoint them. One of the key problems today is that politics is such a disgrace, good people don’t go into government. I’d want to change that.”
