Hurricane Matthew is churning in the Caribbean and could possibly take a swipe Florida later this week. All of the latest models have the Category 4 storm’s eye coming within a couple hundred miles of the state, which means that Floridians can expect more beach erosion, high winds, and tons of rain.
Remember, hurricanes are unpredictable and the slightest stall or change in atmospheric weather conditions could steer the mega-storm directly towards Florida’s, so go buy your supplies. With all that said, the name of the game this month is politics.
Florida is ground zero in the world of politics, this we all know. And like hurricanes, politics can also be unpredictable.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
So as national political figures converge on the not-so-sunny state this week to campaign for their respective candidates, as they may have to negotiate the storm and adjust their travel plans.
VP Joe Biden was able to get out of dodge after a quick trip to Orlando where he rallied for Clinton. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D) was in Jacksonville for another Clinton rally and was also able to leave before the storm arrived.
But will President Obama, who is tapped for a Miami-area rally for Clinton and a fundraiser on Miami Beach this week skip the trip because of Hurricane Matthew?Expect both political parties to find some way of politicizing the hurricane’s trail of destruction, especially if it leaves a lasting mark on Florida.
Trump doesn’t have any events planned in Florida thus far, but things could change as quickly as the weather will.
The latest Quinnipiac poll has Clinton leading Trump by 5-points in Florida, so if the storm does directly impact Florida, we can surely expect Trump and Clinton to be campaigning among the flood waters and debris left by the storm.
Again, this is just another poll. With Trump galvanizing thousands of “unlikely voters,” all bets could be off in Florida and around the country.
As far as the hotly contested US Senate race between Senator Marco Rubio (R) and Rep. Patrick Murphy (D) goes, it looks as if Rubio is pulling away.
