With Democrats calling for stricter gun laws after the Oregon college campus shooting, Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio, has come out in opposition of any anti-gun legislation, saying that laws enacted to try to prevent these kinds of shootings “aren’t effective.”
Appearing on the conservative and national syndicated Mike Gallagher radio show, Rubio stated:“Gun crime is committed by criminals, criminals ignore the law. That’s why they’re criminals. If you pass a law that makes it harder for people to have weapons for defense, the only people that are not going to have them are the people that follow the law. Law-abiding people are going to follow the law. Criminals, by definition, ignore the law. They will still have their weapons.”
As the TB Times pointed out, Rubio’s discussed the much larger “societal problem” that Americans face.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
The conversation started with a broader discussion.
“We have a serious societal problem. Whether it’s mental illness, obviously, which we need to take more seriously. Whether it’s family break down and the lack of values being taught at a young age, or a combination of all these things. We do have serious problems in America. But we’re focusing too much on what it is people are using to commit violence, and not enough on why it is that people are committing violence.
“Obviously a terrible tragedy, and our hearts go out to all of those that have been impacted by it. … But we have violence in this country and we need to deal with the root causes of that violence, and they’re deep and they’re societal, and they have probably little to do with our laws and more to do with our families and our communities.”
Hillary Clinton has just vowed to sign executive orders to restrict gun rights.
Expect Rubio and others to pounce on Clinton’s obvious anti-gun pander to her political party’s liberal base of support.
