Loretta Lynch was just sworn in on Monday as Attorney General and on Monday night she said the Justice Department will continue its investigation into the death of Freddie Gray.
She met with President Obama to discuss the riots in Baltimore and then released the following statement:As our investigative process continues, I strongly urge every member of the Baltimore community to adhere to the principles of nonviolence. In the days ahead, I intend to work with leaders throughout Baltimore to ensure that we can protect the security and civil rights of all residents. And I will bring the full resources of the Department of Justice to bear in protecting those under threat, investigating wrongdoing, and securing and end to violence.
It will be interesting to see how she deals with the situation in comparison to Eric Holder. His involvement in Ferguson seemingly fueled the fire with the lieutenant governor of Missouri, Peter Kinder, saying the Justice Office is more racist than St. Louis.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
As for the violence in Baltimore, it is stemming from the police treatment of Freddie Gray. He died in police custody from a spinal cord injury. Prior to arresting him and loading him into the police van he was coherent but when the police van reached its location he was non responsive. The situation is still being investigated.
The White House sent three representatives to his funeral on Monday. They were Broderick Johnson, chairman of the My Brother’s Keeper Task Force, Heather Foster, adviser in the White House Office of Public Engagement and Elias Alcantara, associate director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.
Broderick and Foster previously attended the funeral for Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.Maryland’s Governor, Larry Hogan, signed an executive order Monday evening declaring a state of emergency and activating the National Guard in an effort to control the riots. He said the “looting and acts of violence in Baltimore will not be tolerated.”
At a Monday night press conference Hogan also said:
Look, people have the right to protest and express their frustration. But Baltimore city families deserve peace and safety in their community, and these acts of violence and destruction of property cannot and will not be tolerated.
Maryland State Police have also ordered an additional 40 troopers to Baltimore to assist the 42 troopers who are already there assisting city police. It is said Maryland is also asking mid-Atlantic police forces nearby for as many as 5,000 officers to assist.
Baltimore police have stated their lives are in jeopardy because local gangs are planning to team up and take them out.
